Planetarium Calicut now wins a place in the Planetarium
map of the World Regional Science Centre. Calicut, houses
a 250 seater Planetarium fitted with a sophisticated Zeiss
projector. Star studded night sky allured the man from the
dawn of civilization. He gazed at it with awe and wonder
and strived to find his place in the midst of the celestial
bodies. He closely observed the movement of planets and
stars and thereby developed the calendar system. The science
of Astronomy also emerged as a result of this intense study
of the sky. With the progress of civilization newer and
better than ever instruments were developed for astronomical
observations which intensified star gazing and widened human
knowledge on the celestial bodies. Planetarium is an instrument
which educates the man about the objects of the sky, their
nature and their relative movement by simulating the night
sky of a particular place at a particular date and time
of the year. In the Planetarium the night sky is projected
from a highly sophisticated and intricately complex instrument
from the centre of a hemispherical dome under which the
visitors sit surrounding the projector. This gives the visitors
the feeling of being a part of the place the sky of which
has been stimulated over their eyes. A Planetarium can take
a common man to any part of the world at any point of time.
He can identify some well-known stars and constellations
like Pole Star, Great Bear, Sirius, Orion etc. By sitting
in calicut today, you can look through the window of the
universe to visit galaxies light years away. Or you can
instantly be taken to the North Pole looking at the movement
of the Sun where you have six months day light.
