Kozhikode district occupies a prominent place in the
history of Malayalam journalism. The origin of journalism
in this district can be traced back to 1880. The Kerala
Pathrika is likely to be the earliest newspaper published
from Kozhikode. Keralam, Kerala Sanchari and Bharath
Vilasam are among the other news papers published
form Kozhikode before 1893. Some denominational news papers
devoted to the cause of the advancement of the Muslims
and the Thiyyas were also published from Kozhikode. But
most of them ceased publication.
The number of dailies published from Kozhikode district
at present is fifteen. They are all published from Kozhikode
city. These dailies are Chandrika, Kozhikode Times,
Deshabhimani, Indian Express, Janayugam, Keralakaumudi,
Malayala Manorama, Mathrubhumi, Madhyamam, Mangalam, Malabar
Express, News Kerala, Pradeepam, Rashtra Deepika and
Siraj.
Nearly all news agencies other major news papers published
from outside the district are represented in Kozhikode.
A considerable number of weeklies, fortnightlies and monthlies
are published from here.
Calicut
Pressclub
The Calicut Press club is the nerve centre of media activities
in the Malabar Region. Not only print media but electronic
media are also associated with this press club. It is
the seat of the Kozhikode district unit of the Kerla Union
of working journalists (KUWJ)
The Calicut Press Club came in to existence three decades
ago. It was on 16th November, 1970. The foundation stone
of the press club building was laid by the Chief Minister
late C. Achutha Menon.
The functioning of the Calicut Press Club began with around
70 members and Mr. P. Arvindakshan and Mr. P. D. Damodaran
were the founder president and secretary respectively.
Now it is the one of the largest district units with more
than 200 members and undertakes a variety of activities.
The Calicut Press Club has instituted three widely recognized
awards in the field of journalism viz C.H. Muhammed Koya
Award, K. C. Madhavakurup Award and the Mustaq Award.
Kozhikode has the unique distinction of being the production
centers of all major Malayalam newspapers. Eight Malayalam
dailies are published from kozhikode which itself is indicative
of the importance of Calicut Press club.
Audio-Visual Media
The Kozhikode station of All India Radio was commissioned
on 14th May, 1950 and it has two transmitters- Kozhikode
A of 10 Kilowatt power and Kozhikode B (Vividh Bharathi)
of 1 Kilowatt power. A television transmitter has been
functioning in Kozhikode from 3rd July, 1984 relaying
programmes from Delhi and Thiruvanathapuram Doordarsan.
Besides, Cable T.V. net work and Satellite Television
are also available in many parts of the district.
