DMO allays fears over DEC tablets
KOZHIKODE, Mar 10: The District Medical Office here has said that quality of the Diethylcarbamezyne (DEC) tablets distributed as part of a campaign to prevent the spread of elephantiasis and filariasis has been ensured. There was no cause for worry for those who had taken the tablets, District Medical Officer Betty Jose said in a release yesterday. A section of the media had reported that the DEC tablets distributed had been of poor quality.
KSEB plans three hydel projects
KOZHIKODE, Mar 10: Three hydro-electric projects that would conform to the stringent norms for environmental preservation laid down by the United Nations are in the pipeline. Officials of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) are keen on ensuring that these projects meet the standards of the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change.
Man found dead
KOZHIKODE, Mar 10: A migrant cobbler from Tamil Nadu was found dead at Ramanattukara on the outskirts of the city yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mukundan, 60, hailing from Coimbatore,.Local people found the body near a cinema hall at 7.30 a.m. The body was shifted to the Medical College Hospital here.Mukundan, separated from his family, had been staying at Ramanattukara for two decades now. Feroke Sub-Inspector M.C. Kunhumoin prepared the inquest.

One dies in Mookambika temple rush
UDUPI, Mar 10: Tragedy struck the grand finale of the Maharathotsava at the famous Kollur Mookambika temple on Tuesday evening. One person died and another suffered serious injuries when the wheel of the Ratha (Brahmaratha) ran over them during the massive rush at the temple entrance. Both devotees were from Kerala. Police sources said Babu, 45, who died en route to hospital, is a library assistant in Madapalli College, Vadakara, Calicut district. Haridas, 45, who is seriously injured, hails from Mele Chovva of Kannur. The authorities are probing the lapses in security which led to the accident. The Rathasanchalana and Ratharohana ceremonies were at 9 am after the rituals and special poojas held under the leadership of temple chief priest and Tantri Manjunath Adiga.
Kerala may start sea plane service for tourists
T'PURAM, Mar 10: Kerala may have a sea plane service to boost tourism if a study suggests that such a project is feasible, tourism minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Tuesday. "The proposed project will become a reality only if the feasibility study looks into areas of pollution and whether inland water transport and fishing will be affected by the service," he said. The minister was replying to a calling attention motion moved by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator V.N. Vasavan, who said that sea plane service were now run in Canada, the Maldives and the Philippines. "Let the feasibility report come, then a new company can be formed. After that the marketing can begin," he added. Vasavan said that if sea planes were introduced, tourists can arrive in any major airport and fly to any district.
Pinarayi attacks centre
ALAPPUZHA, Mar 10: Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI (M) state secretary attacked the central government for maintaining a soft attitude regarding the Women's reservation bill. Inaugurating the blockade in front of the telecom office here, Vijayan pointed out that the government is having different altitudes regarding the nuclear deal and the woman's reservation bill. "The government had shown obstinacy regarding the nuclear deal which was lacking in the Parliament, Monday , regarding the Women's reservation bill. Only less than 10 members had obstructed the proceedings of the house, yet the government lacked the will power to pass the bill. "As everyone is aware, the Congress which had pledged the passing of the bill took an u-turn when it mattered the most" - accused Vijayan.
Kerala Feeds' net profit up by 150 per cent
THRISSUR, Mar 10: The state-owned Kerala Feeds Limited here has so far earned a net profit of Rs 2.5 crore during the current fiscal. Kerala Feeds Limited, Chairman, S Sivasankara Pilla told newsmen here Tuesday that the company's net profit in the previous year was Rs one crore. He said that the company's three more projects with an investment of over Rs 40 crore would be commissioned this year. He said that the cattlefeeds factory at Karunagappilly with a capacity of 300 metric tonnes per day would be commissioned in Novemeber. With the functioning of this unit, Kerala Feeds annual production capacity would go up to 2.85 lakh metric tonnes from the existing 1.95 lakh metric tonnes, he said, adding the investment for this unit would be over Rs 35 crore.

Muthoot Group warms up to fresh IPL tender
T'PURAM, Mar 10: Business conglomerate Muthoot Pappachen Group (MPG) of Kerala is planning to own a cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the league's governing council relaxed conditions and invited bids to buy two new franchises. MPG initially planned to own an IPL team but then decided against it because of the high financial involvement. A top company official told IANS on condition of anonymity that the agents of film director Priyadarshan and actor Mohanlal had approached MPG to join the two to own an IPL team. "We were interested and the initial deal was that we would own two-thirds and the film duo would hold one-third and on that lines the capital was to be pumped in. But when we read the fine print, we decided that it was too expensive and backed out," said the Muthoot official.

'CPI-M agitation against Centre causing hardship to people'
T'PURAM, Mar 10: Opposition leader Oommen Chandy Tuesday alleged in the House that the five-day sit-in launched by CPI-M Monday in front of Central Government offices against the UPA Government's policies was causing hardship to common people. "Agitation against price rise of essential commodities has actually become a stir against people of the state. Protestors were not allowing anybody to go inside Post Offices. In many places, roads have been blocked causing problems to people," he said taking up the issue as a submission. Police personnel posted near the venue of agitations were helping the protesters instead of common people who came to Central Government offices for various purposes, he said.

Rajya Sabha passes Women's Reservation Bill
NEW DELHI, Mar 10: Despite vociferous opposition, the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the historic Women's Reservation Bill that reserves 33 per cent of legislative seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The 13-year perilous political struggle to give women adequate representation ended with the Rajya Sabha finally debating the contentious issue and then voting 186-1 on the Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2008 amid acrimony, political divides and ugly scenes of dissent. In the 245-member House with an effective strength of 233, the bill required the backing of at least 155 members. Only the last step remains - of the Lok Sabha endorsing it. With the numbers stacked in favour of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the lower house, this should hopefully be a formality, said activists and leaders, who had fought long and hard to see the day.

Women's Bill row: 7 MPs suspended in Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI, Mar 10: Seven members of Rajya Sabha belonging to SP, RJD, LJP and an unattached MP were suspended on Tuesday for remaining part of the Budget session for their unruly behaviour in the House on Monday over the Women's Reservation Bill. The suspended members are Subhash Yadav (RJD), Sabir Ali (LJP), Veerpal Singh Yadav, Nand Kishore Yadav, Amir Alam Khan and Kamal Akhtar (SP), and Ejaz Ali(Unattached). The motion for their suspension was moved by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan and was passed by a voice vote. The action was taken under Rule 256 of the House, for showing total "disregard for dignity of Council and authority of the Chair" by obstructing the business of the House.

Oz court adjourns toddler's case till June 29
MELBOURNE, Mar 10: An Australian court in Melbourne on Tuesday adjourned till June 29 the hearing of the case of Gursewak Dhillon, accused in the death of toddler Gurshan Singh Channa, with the prosecution seeking extra time to prepare evidence against him. 23-year-old Dhillon, a part-time taxi driver, did not apply for bail on a charge of manslaughter by criminal negligence. Dhillon, wearing a white polo shirt, sat quietly in the prisoners dock during the brief appearance at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court. He nodded when asked by Magistrate Jelena Popovic if he understood the case was being adjourned and that he could apply for bail at any time, local media reports said.
U.S. and Russia in final push to clinch new START treaty
WASHINGTON, Mar 10: U.S. and Russian arms control officials began on Tuesday what both sides hope will be a final push to clinch a treaty cutting their strategic nuclear arsenals, officials said. Dozens of negotiators from each country were taking part in the START talks which resumed at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Geneva after a 10-day break for consultations in their capitals, they said. "The two sides are committed to concluding negotiations. What is important is that we arrive at a quality agreement," a U.S. spokesman said. In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed hope the negotiators could reach agreement within a few weeks.

'We will miss Jadeja but can cope with his absence'
JAIPUR, Mar 10: Rajasthan Royals would miss key performer Ravindra Jadeja in third edition of the Indian Premier League, but the team has enough resources to lift the title, according to skipper Shane Warne. "Jadeja had performed very well in the first edition and even for the country he was doing well. Yes, he will be missed but we have others like Abhishek Jhunjhunwala who can stand up and perform," Warne said. Jadeja's hope of playing in the event went up in smoke after the IPL governing council turned down his appeal against a one-year ban, which was imposed for negotiating a contract without informing his side.
Indians impress in qualifying round of archery
NEW DELHI, Mar 10: Chinna Raju Srither managed an aggregate score of 688 in men's individual compound section as Indians impressed during qualifying rounds of the six-day invitational archery test event for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The test event, with 83 participants from England, Scotland, Jersey, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and Welsh, commenced at the new state-of-the-art Yamuna Sports Complex here Monday. Srither led the chart in men's individual compound category, followed by Lang Keong Hon (685) of Malaysia and compatriot Jignas Chittibomma (685), respectively. In women's Individual compound section, Bheigyabati Chanu got the third position, while the English duo of Jane Nicola Hunt and Rae Nichola got the first and second spot, respectively.
