Fishermen rescued
KOZHIKODE, Feb 9: The Coast Guard at Beypore, yesterday , rescued 10 fishermen stranded in two boats off the Kozhikode coast for five days. The boats were towed by a Coast Guard ship to Beypore at around 7 p.m. The officials interrogated the crew and inspected the vessels, which were handed over to the Department of Fisheries. The crew members are in good health. Officials said the boats were from Tamil Nadu.
J&K Bank trounce Malabar United 3-0
T'PURAM, Feb 9: Jammu and Kashmir Bank trounced Malabar United, Kozhikode 3-0 in a Group C quarterfinal league match of the eighth G V Raja football tournament here on Monday. At half time, the winners led by a solitary goal, scored by Hardip Singh in the sixth minute.
Centenary celebrations of Sanskrit college to begin on Feb 21
THRISSUR, Feb 9: The three-day long centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, formerly Pavaratty Sahitya Deepika Sanskrit College, founded by late P T Kuriakose Master in 1909, would begin here on February 21.
Tata ready to demolish dam if dam safety authority asks
MUNNAR, Feb 9: Tata officials yesterday said they will demolish the check dams constructed by them in Munnar only if the dam safety authority asks for it. This was stated by them at the hearing conducted by Idukki district collector Ashok Kumar Singh. The officials said the district collector has no power to issue notice to demolish the check dams.

DD, AIR to set healthy norms
KOZHIKODE, Feb 9: Mrinal Pande, veteran journalist and new Chairperson of Prasar Bharati, has said that Doordarshan and All India Radio will strive to set healthy norms of journalism in the broadcast media and efforts will be made to improve them. She was attending a meet-the-press programme at the press club here yesterday. Asked if Doordarshan planned to start a 24-hour Malayalam news channel and about the alleged neglect of its facilities here, which included a studio. Pande said she had just begun studying the issues facing the channel and had set a limited agenda for the first meeting of the newly constituted Prasar Bharati board.
Farmers' festival begins today
KOZHIKODE, Feb 9: The five-day farmers' festival 'Karshika Sankethika Darshanam-2010,' organised by the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) here, will begin at Peruvannamuzhi in the district on Monday. The festival, to be held at the experimental farm of the IISR, will showcase various field technologies that benefit the farming community. District panchayat president K.P. Kunhammed Kutty will inaugurate the programme at 10.30 a.m. Nearly 20 agricultural research organisations in and outside the State will put up stalls exhibiting their technologies. The Directorate of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants, Gujarat; the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod; the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram; the Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur, Karnataka; the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi; the Indian Council for Agricultural Research Complex, Goa; are some of the institutes putting up stalls and exhibiting various technologies and machineries developed by them.
84.37% coverage in Pulse Polio
KOZHIKODE, Feb 9: As much as 84.37 per cent of the targeted 2, 62,081 children up to the age of five in the district were administered polio vaccine during the Pulse Polio immunisation programme yesterday. District Medical Officer Betty Jose said that 2,21, 128 children were administered the vaccine at 2,324 booths, 35 transit booths and 14 mobile booths. The Health Department had made arrangements at these 2,373 booths, including those at the primary health centres, the government hospitals, dispensaries, clubs, the bus and the railway stations and the anganwadis, for administering the vaccine from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.She said that A.K. Saseendran, MLA, inaugurated the district- level programme at the Community Health Centre, Balussery.
Kerala software park land acquisition complete
T'PURAM, Feb 9: The state government on Monday said all formalities for acquisition of the remaining 245.89 acres for the development of Technocity, the next phase of Technopark software park near here, has been completed. With this, Technopark's total area will spread across 451 acres, which includes not just space for IT-ITES firms but also residential, commercial, hospitality, medical and educational facilities to make it a complete IT city. The project is planned as a satellite city that would not strain the resources and infrastructure of the state capital. "In addition to IT, other focus areas will be biotechnology, nanotechnology, high-end manufacturing and also R&D," said Ajay Kumar, principal secretary in the IT department.

Bus charge hike after court's decision: Minister
T'PURAM, Feb 9: The state government would take a decision on the demand from owners to increase bus fares after the High Court decided on the issue pending before it, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil said here on Monday. Speaking to reporters here,he said all trade unions in the transport sector had been issued notices to submit their views as respondents. The next hearing has been posted for February 15, he said. The cabinet would discuss the issue after the court's decision, he said. He said 30 new `Ananthapuri Fast' services would be introduced in the capital city. A total of four airconditioned and 11 non-airconditioned low floor buses would also be introduced in Thiruvananthapuram, he said. The inauguration of the work on KSRTC's new bus terminal complex at Thampanoor in the city would be held tomorrow, the minister said.

Need to strengthen statistical machinery: Jaiswal
T'PURAM, Feb 9: Data collected through administrative system in the country was far from satisfactory and state and sub-state level statistical machinery should be strengthened, Union Minister of State for Central Statistics and Programme Implementation Sriprakash Jaiswal said Inaugurating the 17th conference of central and state statistical organisations here, Jaiswal said statistical data from administrative system was often unsatisfactory in quality and incomplete. The collection of data was also being delayed owing to lack of co-ordination between departments, he said. Jaiswal said economic growth of the country had increased the demand for credible data to aid planning programmes. He wanted the states to make full use of the World Bank- aided Indan Statistical Strengthening Project.

15 armymen dead, scores missing as avalanche sweeps away tr
SRINAGAR, Feb 9: As many as 15 armymen were killed and 17 others seriously injured in a massive avalanche that hit them during winter warfare training on the steep slopes of a ski resort, 70 kms from here. The avalanche came down on a 60-strong group as they were going up the sheer ice walls in Khilanmarg with near zero visibility hampering any evasive action by them. An army spokesman, Colonel J S Brar and police said 15 men were buried in tonnes of snow and 17 others were rescued and moved to base hospital at Srinagar. While two soldiers were still missing, 26 others had been rescued by nightfall, after which the operations were called off. The dead included an officer, Lt Prateek, and 14 other ranks from the Army's prestigious High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), he said.

Rathore stabbed by youth outside court
CHANDIGARH, Feb 9: Former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore was on Monday stabbed thrice in the face by a youth with a knife that left him bleeding outside a local court hearing his appeal in the Ruchika molestation case. 68-year-old Rathore was stabbed by the youth identified as Utsav Sharma, a resident of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, in the left cheek. A bleeding Rathore covered the wound with a handkerchief before getting into his car. While the youth, who was pursuing a course in film production in Ahmedabad, used his left hand to stab the former IPS officer, he delivered punches with his right hand on Rathore's right cheek. He also attempted to attack the former DGP on the arm, but the police personnel present there overpowered him and nailed him down as he tried to run in the midst of a commotion outside the court.

Shuttle Endeavour blasts off for space station
CAPE CANAVERAL, Feb 9: The space shuttle Endeavour bolted off its seaside launch pad on Monday on a voyage to install the last two main pieces of the International Space Station. The 4:14am EST (0914 GMT) blastoff from the Kennedy Space Center shattered the predawn tranquillity with a deafening roar and a brilliant tower of flames that momentarily turned the dark Florida sky as bright as day. Low clouds forced NASA to postpone Endeavour's first launch attempt on Sunday morning. Scattered clouds also threatened visibility but cleared in time to meet flight safety rules. The shuttle carries the station's last connecting hub and a dome-shaped cupola with seven windows to provide the crew with panoramic views outside the station. The modules were built in Italy for NASA and will complete US assembly of the orbital outpost, a $100 billion project of 16 nations that has been under construction since 1998.
It is India which blinked on talks: Pak
ISLAMABAD, Feb 9: Hours after India proposed dates for foreign secretary-level talks, Pakistan has claimed that it was New Delhi which had blinked not Islamabad. Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that it was India which had talked about breaking their "relationship" with us and their turning their back on us. "But two days ago, India has approached and said they want to sit and talk to us and want to resume their relationship with us," Qureshi told a public meeting in Multan in Punjab yesterday. "Pakistan hasn't knelt... It didn't kneel. Pakistan held its ground," the Pakistan foreign minister indulging in rhetorics as a build up to the talks has started. Qureshi said that Pakistan would present its case before India claiming "our case is strong. It's not week, whether it be Kashmir or water or any other issue."

1st Test: Steyn claims 7 wickets to strangle India
NAGPUR, Feb 9: Dale Steyn produced a sensational exhibition of seam bowling to rip apart India's fragile middle order and leave the hosts staring at an embarrassing defeat in the first Test against South Africa on Monday. The 26-year-old Steyn returned with a career-best haul of seven for 51 as the hosts were bundled out for 233 in the first innings and suffered the ignominy of follow-on despite Virender Sehwag's aggressive 109. Trailing by a mammoth 325 runs, the Indians were struggling at 66 for two in their second innings at close of play on an eventful third day which saw the hosts lose as many as six wickets in the span of 12 runs immediately after the tea break. Murali Vijay (27) and Sachin Tendulkar (15) were at the crease at stumps with India still needing 259 runs to make the visitors bat again.
Players want Prabhjot Singh as skipper: Sources
NEW DELHI, Feb 9: The crisis on the captaincy issue of the Indian hockey squad deepened on Monday with players backing Prabhjot Singh as the skipper of the World Cup side. According to sources, Rajpal Singh doesn't have the backing of the team-mates due to his stand during the face-off with Hockey India officials over payment issues. Meanwhile, chief coach Jose Brasa was adamant on pushing his case that Prabhjot Singh should be made the skipper of the World Cup side. On Sunday, sources in the team said Brasa has summoned Prabhjot, who had gone to his native place in Punjab after he was being assured of captaincy by the Spaniard, to meet him to discuss how to make a united move to present their case.
