SFI activists lock up teachers
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: Seven teachers of the Department of Physics of St Joseph's College, Devagiri here, were locked up in a room by Students' Federation of India (SFI) activists on Tuesday alleging that nominations of some of their candidates for the college union elections were not accepted and sent for scrutiny by the college election authorities. The election is due on July 28.
Teacher's family promised help
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan said here yesterday that the government would extend all possible help to the family of James Augustine, headmaster of a primary school who died following violence against a cluster teachers' meeting in Malappuram last week. He was talking to reporters after visiting the family of the teacher at his residence at Thottumukkam near here.
CBI hands over CDs of Narco test in Abaya case to HC
KOCHI, Jul 24: The CBI handed over to the Kerala High Court, a sealed cover containing CDs of narco analysis test conducted by it during investigation of the Sister Abaya case. The CBI standing counsel handed over the cover to Justice V Ramkumar.
`Mathrubhumi' office attacked
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: Suspected activists of the Muslim League pelted stones at the office of Malayalam daily 'Mathrubhumi' here.police said. The incident occurred around 5.30 PM when the League volunteers, who were taking out a march in protest against the attack on the `League House' earlier, reportedly stoned the newspaper office, the sources said.

Hotel secures stay
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: ITC-Welcomgroup's Fortune Hotel at Chakkorathukulam here secured a stay from the High Court yesterday against an order of the Kozhikode Corporation. The civic body served a closure notice on the hotel on Monday in connection with the case of the four-star hotel dumping waste at various parts of the city. Hotel manager general manager C B Suriya Narayanan said the hotel management had contact Mayor M Bhaskaran and informed him of the interim stay order.
Police personnel suspended
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: The police on Tuesday placed under suspension Nadakkavu Additional Sub-Inspector Haridas Nambiar and a constable attached to the Nadakkavu station K. Anandan on charges of violating the norms of the Supreme Court while arresting All India Students Federation (AISF) Kozhikode district president P Lyvins on Friday. North Zone Inspector-General of Police V Shantaram yesterday served notices of suspension on the two police personnel pending inquiry. Following the disciplinary action, the Communist Party of India (CPI), called off its march to the office of the Commissioner of Kozhikode City yesterday.
Action against spurious liquor
KOZHIKODE, Jul 24: The district administration has decided to take stern action against brewing and distribution of spurious liquor in the district. A meeting held at the Collectorate here yesterday said that residents from Koyilandi and Nadapuram had complained of rampant brewing and distribution of spurious liquor in these regions. A panchayat-level monitoring committee would be formed to check the sale of illegal liquor. Assistant Excise Commissioner C C Thomas, Additional District Magistrate T Bhaskaran, Thooneri block panchayat president M Damu, among others, participated.
15 children hospitalised after inhaling noxious air
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Jul 24: Fifteen girls of a school near here were hospitalised after they complained of uneasiness, believed to have been caused by inhalation of noxious air. Sources at the Peroorkada hospital, where all the children were admitted, said while nine children have been discharged, five others were kept under observation. One child, with a history of cardiac problem, was referred to the medical college hospital, the sources said. They said most of the children complained of dizziness, which might have been caused either by noxious air emitting from a broken drainage near the school building or the air containing elements of chemicals sprayed in a nearby farm. The children belonged to the G V Raja Sports School at Mylam on the outskirts of the city.

Somnath a betrayer of the party: Pinarayi
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Jul 24: Hitting out at Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee soon after his expulsion by the CPI(M) politburo for defying the party line during trust vote, the party's Kerala unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan branded him as a 'betrayer'. "Chatterjee has betrayed the party in which he had held high positions. His place in history will be that of a betrayer of the party", Vijayan, a CPI(M) polit bureau member, told reporters at Malappuram in Kozhikode district. But M V Raghavan, CMP leader, who was expelled from the CPI(M) 22 years ago, said the move only showed that 'the CPI(M) has become a 'Stalinist party." "The CPI(M) has ceased to be a Communist party long since. It is a Stalinist party and I am not surprised that it had taken such a position on the Speaker issue", he told reporters.

Power crisis casts huge burden on KSEB
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Jul 24: Kerala's electricity crisis triggered by monsoon failure has cast an additional burden to the tune of Rs seven crore a day on state electricity board for buying costly power from outside sources to meet the domestic demand. Disclosing this in the state assembly during question hour, State Electricity Minister A K Balan said Kerala Electricity Board (KSEB) had spent Rs 450 crore from May 20 to July 17 for purchasing power from outside. The Minister, however, dismissed chances of extending the duration of existing 30-minute peak time loadshedding for domestic consumers. The recommendations submitted by KSEB to tide over the situation were under consideration of State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC), he said.

CPI (M) expels Somnath Chatterjee
NEW DELHI, Jul 24: CPM on Wednesday expelled Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party on the ground of "seriously compromising" its position. "The politburo of the CPM has unanimously decided to expel Somnath Chatterjee from the membership of the party with immediate effect," a party statement said after a meeting of its politburo. "This action has been taken under Article 19 (13) of the party constitution for seriously compromising the party position," it said. Among those who attended the politburo meeting were general secretary Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury, M K Pandhe, S R Pillai and Brinda Karat. Chatterjee had been under pressure to quit the constitutional post after the four left parties withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government following their differences over the India-US nuclear deal.

Somnath Chatterjee violated party discipline: Biman
KOLKATA, Jul 24: The CPI(M) on wednesday accused Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee of violating party discipline by not resigning from his post despite a party directive to do so. "Somnath Chatterjee has violated party discipline", party politburo member Biman Bose told reporters. He said none in the CPI(M) was above the party. "We (Comunists) have to abide by party rules. The party will severe all connections with those who do not follow party dictates. We cannot keep him as Speaker". Asked what action Chatterjee might face for violating party discipline, Bose said "clause number 19 in the party constitution has clearly spelt the provisions in this regard." Asked if expulsion of Chatterjee would affect the party, he said "I would not like to discuss this."

Nepal's first President sworn-in; Prachanda absent
KATHMANDU, Jul 24: Amid the political limbo over government formation, Indian-origin Madhesi leader Ram Baran Yadav was on wednesday sworn-in as the first President of the nascent republic of Nepal, three days after his victory in the historic poll for the coveted post. The 60-year-old doctor-turned politician was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri at a grand function attended by some 2,000 people at the Sheetal Niwas, the office-cum residence of the new President. "I, in the name of God take the oath of office that I will remain committed to the nation and its people to fulfil the duty with my utmost honesty and protect the sovereignty and freedom of the nation," the new President said.
US says it's ready to push N-deal initiative
NEW DELHI, Jul 24: Delighted at the UPA government's victory in the confidence motion, the US on wednesday said it is geared up to push the civil nuclear initiative and hoped the NSG meeting can be convened in the second week of August so that the American Congress can have a final vote in September. The US has begun lobbying for the initiative and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who is on a tour, will be talking to leaders of Australia, New Zealand and other countries to muster support among the IAEA and Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) members. "A major event has taken place... It is important for India... We are delighted that this has taken place," US Ambassador David C Mulford said in a telephonic press conference from Ohio in the US while commenting on the confidence vote which the Manmohan Singh government won on Tuesday.

PCB backs its Champions Trophy security plans
RAWALPINDI, Jul 24: Pakistan's hosting of the Champions Trophy should be beyond dispute because it has met all the security needs of competing teams, the Pakistan Cricket Board's senior official said on Wednesday. The hosting rights to September's biennial limited-overs tournament will be debated in a teleconference between the 10 full member countries of the International Cricket Council _ set to start at 0800 GMT on Thursday. Pakistan's hosting rights are in jeopardy because Australia, New Zealand and England have expressed concerns about security in the country. Sri Lanka is a standby venue. ``If it's a battle of legality and logic, we have won it,'' the PCB's chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi told the Associated Press.

LOS ANGELES, Jul 24: Sania Mirza and her partner Bethanie Mattek stormed into the quarterfinals of the USD 600,000 East West Bank Classic tournament after defeating Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva in straight sets here.
