Chandy refutes VS' charge on late Governor
KOZHIKODE, Feb 4: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today refuted the opposition charge that resumption of official functions during the mourning period declared by the government was tantamount to showing disrespect to late Governor M O H Farooq.
Talking to newspersons at a function to inaugurate a seminar organized by the government-run Janasree Mission here, he clarified the government only resumed official functions yesterday after culmination of the seven-day mourning from January 26 to February 1. However, he said the official announcement erroneously put the last date as February 2 instead of February one. In fact the action of the Opposition, which stayed away from the funeral in Puducherry last week, amounted to showing disrespect to the late Governor, he added.
Chandy regrets slow growth in IT sector
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 4: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Thursday regretted that the state failed to achieve in the IT education the same level of growth which it attained in the general education sector.
Addressing the valedictory function of the two-day State School IT Festival at the Technopark here, Chandy said state had to focus more on developing IT education and related IT based industries.
Modern waste plants in all districts
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 4: Modern waste processing plants will be installed in all the districts to solve the problems of waste management in the state, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said today.
Briefing on cabinet decisions here, he said the plants were imminent in four districts and the existing waste treatment plants at Brahmapuram (Kochi) and Njeliyanparanbu (Kozhikode) will be upgraded using the most modern technology. The land for the plants had been committed at Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam and the work would start after the place has been identified, he said.
Transfer of cops not decided by associations, says Chandy
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 4: Transfers in the police department are not decided by the association, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Addressing reporters after the weekly cabinet meet, Chandy said there are certain norms for that.
A sum of Rs 5 lakhs would be given to table tennis player Maria Rony.
Chandy said only an unofficial clearance has been obtained for the Skycity Project. If clearance is obtained, further proceedings will be taken.

Sampath case: Court rejects cop's plea
KOCHI, Feb 4: The Kerala High Court rejected DIG Vijay Sakkarai's plea filed against the CBI probe on the custodial death of Sampath, main accused in the Puthoor Sheela murder case.
A division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur directed to raise the cop's demand of removing the single bench's statements against him, before them itself.
Justice V Ramkumar ordered for a CBI probe on the plea filed Sampath's brother. In the order, the court had harshly criticized the cop.

Shouting slogans is not violation of party discipline, says Chennithala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 4: Shouting slogans in favour of somebody is not violation of party discipline, said KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala. Many have shouted slogans in favour of me and the chief minister and that cannot be seen as violation of party discipline.
Talking to reporters after the KPCC meet, Chennithala said this in response to the slogans shouted in favour of K Sudhakaran when he came to attend the KPCC meet. His problems will be sorted out soon and he can talk to me and the chief minister any time.
Chennithala said the poster controversy is a closed chapter. There are no differences of opinion between the government and the party on the issue and there is no need for a post mortem on it.

Centre orders probe on Malayali businessman's connection with
NEW DELHI, Feb 4: The centre has ordered a probe on the underworld connection of a Malayali businessman whose business kingdom ranges from newspaper to real estate.
The Home Ministry has directed four South Indian states including Kerala to find out whether the above mentioned man has any connection with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who went into hiding in Pakistan.
The businessman also has connections with institutions under the Catholic Church, and has business interests in Singapore and Chennai.

Students in Tamil Nadu have to learn Tamil as a language: Jayal
CHENNAI, Feb 4: Students who have other languages as their mother tongue should learn Tamil till Class 6 in all schools across the state, Tamil Nadu government today made it clear in the assembly.
"Students in Tamil Nadu have to learn Tamil as a language. There is no change in that," chief minister Jayalalithaa said, responding to a query by Congress member Gopinath who said students from other states were finding it difficult in view of lack of Tamil teachers.
Jayalalithaa said learning Tamil in schools was a must as similar practice was in place in states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, where Kannada and Telugu were taught compulsorily.

Mortar fire kills scores in Homs, Syria
DAMASCUS, Feb 4: At least 217 civilians, including women and children, died in a "massacre" by Syrian forces in the central city of Homs, a rights group said Saturday, urging the people to rise up against the regime.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of the deaths were caused by mortar fire in the Al Khalidiya district of Homs, which has become a flashpoint of the 10-month revolt against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
"It's a real massacre," the observatory's director Rami Abderrahman told the media, calling for the 'immediate intervention' of the Arab League to end the killing.
South Sudan shootout kills 37, wounds UN policeman
JUBA, Feb 4: A shoot-out among South Sudanese security forces using truck-mounted machineguns killed 37 people and injured a United Nations policeman on Wednesday, U.N. and government officials said today.
The government in South Sudan - formed in July, six years after a peace agreement that ended decades of civil war - is struggling to assert control in a country awash with weapons and whose army is made up of former rival militias.
The shooting broke out when the commissioner for Rumbek North County interrupted a meeting about recent cattle raiding with other officials in Unity state and made "angry remarks", according to Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesman for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Keep up never-say-die attitude for tri-series: Gavaskar
NEW DELHI, Feb 4: India's impressive fielding performance in the second Twenty20 International in Melbourne came in for praise from former captain Sunil Gavaskar, who said the visitors' should carry the never-say-die attitude in the ODI triangular-series starting on Sunday.
Gavaskar said India had not won too many matches on the back of impressive fielding performance and Friday's eight-wicket victory against Australia was one of them.
"I was thinking today's match would also go like the first T20 and a repeat of the England tour where we could not win a single match. But it was a very good turnaround due to excellent fielding," Gavaskar said.
Dhoni credits 'exceptional' fielding for first win in Australia
MELBOURNE, Feb 4: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was full of praise for his side's "exceptional" work on the field in the second Twenty20 International against Australia on Friday, which helped the visitors' register their first win in the ongoing tour.
An agile India effected as many as four run outs to restrict Australia to 131 and then rode on Gautam Gambhir's unbeaten 56 to pocket the match by eight wickets and snap their losing streak Down Under.
The visitors had earlier lost the Test series 0-4 to Australia before suffering a 31-run defeat in the first Twenty20 game in Sydney. |
