Nod for draft proposals of People's Plan
KOZHIKODE, Mar 12: The City Corporation Council, yesterday , approved the draft proposals of the People's Plan Campaign for 2010-11 with some amendments.The total outlay for the next fiscal is Rs.19.6 crore, including Rs.3.73 crore in the Special Component Plan envisaged for the welfare schemes for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Assistance for constructing toilets
KOZHIKODE, Mar 12: The District Sanitation Mission will contribute Rs.2,200 and the respective grama panchayats Rs.300 in a move to provide Rs.2,500 for construction of toilets for houses being constructed under the EMS Housing Scheme. This was decided at a meeting of the District Sanitation Mission, chaired by district panchayat president K.P. Kunhammedkutty, at the Collectorate here.
Chamber to hold dharna on March 25
KOZHIKODE, Mar 12: Merchants' organisations under the banner of the Federation of North Kerala Chambers of Commerce and Industry will stage a dharna in front of the Railway Divisional Office in Palakkad on March 25 to press for better travel facilities to Bangalore from the northern districts. This was decided at a meeting of the federation held here on Wednesday.
No irregularities in tiger census: Viswom
T'PURAM, Mar 12: TheGovernment on Thursday termed allegations of irregularities in the ongoing tiger census, especially in the Idukki and Ernakulam forest regions of the state, as completely "baseless".
The presence of tiger in Mankulam, Pooyamkutty, Malayatour, Thatekkad and Neriyamangalam in Idukki and Ernakulam forest regions had been recorded in the datasheet during the first phase of census itself, state Forest Minister Binoy Viswam told the state Assembly.
The census was conducted scientificaly under the leadership of Periyar Foundation and Wild Life Institute of India (WWI), Dehradun, Viswam said.

Protest against proposed Tiruthiad sewage project
KOZHIKODE, Mar 12: The proposal of the city Corporation to set up a sewage plant under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) has triggered widespread protest.Representatives of residents' associations in and around Rajiv Nagar at Tiruthiad had held a convention to voice their protest against the project which they alleged would cause extensive pollution in their neighbourhood.The protests had been sparked by fears that the sewage treatment plant for which waste water would be brought from other parts of the city would cause large-scale pollution of the Canolly Canal and the Sarovaram Biopark which were being developed at considerable cost as city's showpieces.
MCH neglected in budget, says forum
KOZHIKODE, Mar 12: The State budget did not make adequate provisions for the opening of a haematology-oncology section at Government Medical College Hospital here, the Blood Patients Protection Council has said."The neglect shown to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital stands out in comparison to the generosity shown by the Finance Minister to the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in the capital. RCC received an allocation of Rs.20 crore. But the Minister was cold to the Kozhikode hospital which also treats a large number of cancer patients," Karim Karassery, spokesman of the council, said.
Scientific team to assess drought situation
T'PURAM, Mar 12: Taking serious note of the drought situation and incidents of sunstroke in worst- hit Palakkad district, Kerala government has decided to send a team of scientists to assess the condition and suggest remedial measures.
Temperature in many parts of Palakkad district touched as high as 40 to 42 degree Celsius in the last few days and five persons suffered sun burns at Mannur, Mankara and Pathiripala areas, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told the assembly on Thursday.
Instructions have been issued to the District Collector to regulate working hours of labourers in unorganised sector in view of the heat condition prevailing in the district. The issue of changing timing of school hours also would be considered, he said.
A team of experts would visit the area in the next two days to assess the situation.
Amitabh Bachchan: Brand ambassador for Kerala
T'PURAM, Mar 12: India biggest and iconic superstar, Amitabh Bachchan has agreed to become the brand ambassador for Kerala Tourism.
The actor was responding to a request put forward by Kerala's Tourism minister, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. In a letter to the minister, Bachchan, said that it would be an honour to be the brand ambassador for a state as beautiful as Kerala.
Kerala, one of the global hotspots for tourism, has recently seen a downturn in the flow of tourists to the state following global recession and more recently, the Thekkady boat tragedy in which over 40 people drowned after their boat capsized. The incident highlighted the poor safety norms followed by the boating sector in the state, which is also one of the mainstays of the tourism industry.

Soofiya granted permission to leave Ernakulam district
KOCHI, Mar 12: The CBI Special Court, Ernakulam, which is looking into terror-related cases in Kerala, yesterday granted relaxation in the bail conditions of PDP leader Abdul Nasar Madhani's wife Soofiya Madhani, an accused in the Tamil Nadu Bus burning case.
Soofiya whould inform officials of National Investigation Agency (NIA) about her whereabouts and activities, the court said.
The court also directed Soofiya not to try to influence or intimidate prosecution witnesses and not do anything which will hamper the investigation.
Earlier, the Ernakulam Sessions court had granted Soofiya conditional bail after her arrest in December last. The court had directed her not to leave Ernakulam district and appear before investigating officials as and when required.

Fake currency notes seized from air passenger
KOCHI, Mar 12: Fake currency notes of face value Rs 25 lakh were on Thursday seized from a passenger, who arrived from Dubai, at the international airport here, officials said.
Acting on a tip-off, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials seized the fake notes from 38-year-old Gopinath, who had been lodged in a Dubai prison over a labour dispute and was deported early on Thursday. He will be produced before Economic Offences court here, they said.
The notes in the denomination of 100 and 500, suspected to have been printed in Pakistan, were packed in 30 bundles and were concealed among toys, DRI officials said.
Gopinath, hailing from Kerala, told the officials that a friend had asked him to carry the bag containing the toys for being handed over to a person at the airport here, they said.

Modi summoned in Gujarat riots probe; resign, says Cong
AHMEDABAD/GANDHINAGAR, Mar 12: The 2002 Gujarat riots returned to haunt Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday when a Supreme Court-appointed investigation team summoned him for questioning on March 21. The Congress immediately asked him to step down.
According to Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief R.K. Raghavan, the move to question Modi follows an order from the Supreme Court on April 27 last year.
That followed a petition from Zakia Jaffri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri who was killed in the riots, and advocate-activist Teesta Setalvad on the wider conspiracy surrounding the 2002 communal frenzy.

Indian Air Force team returns after scaling S America's highest pe
NEW DELHI, Mar 12: In its quest to achieve a world record of conquering the tallest mountains of all seven continents, an Air Force team of five mountaineers has successfully scaled South America's highest peak, Mt Aconcagua, and returned home on Thursday.
"The IAF team consisting of five air warriors has successfully returned after hoisting the Tricolour and the IAF flag on top of the highest peak of South American continent -- Mt Aconcagua -- at 6,962 metres," an IAF press release said here.
The expedition was part of IAF's 'Mission Seven Summit' and the team had to negotiate long treks of eight to nine hours through the dry, treacherous, barren and dusty mountains, with strong winds and chill factor making movement difficult, it said.

India 'close friend' but Pak 'conjoined twin', says Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD, Mar 12: In a delicate balancing act, President Hamid Karzai on Thursday described India as a "close friend" while referring to Pakistan and Afghanistan as "conjoined twins."
In remarks apparently aimed at assuaging Pakistan's concerns about the Indian presence in Afghanistan, Karzai said his country would never allow its soil to be used for activities directed against any of its neighbours.
"India is a close friend of Afghanistan but Pakistan is a twin brother of Afghanistan. We are more than twins, we are conjoined twins. There is no separation, there cannot be a separation," he said in response to a question during a joint news conference with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Independent body to review controversial IPCC
UNITED NATIONS, Mar 12: A respected international scientific body will review the UN's Nobel prize-winning climate panel, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), under fire for errors in a key report on global warming, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said today.
Ban told reporters that the Amsterdam-based InterAcademy Council (IAC), which groups presidents of 15 leading science academies, will carry out the task "completely independently of the United Nations."
Ban however defended the work of the UN's IPCC, whose chairman Rajendra Pachauri has been criticised for his stewardship of the body.
Last month, the United Nations announced it would launch an independent review of the IPCC's work.

Pakistan hit new World Cup low
NEW DELHI, Mar 12: Four-time champions Pakistan slumped to an embarrassing 3-2 defeat by Canada on Thursday to finish last for the first time in the hockey World Cup.
Scott Tupper scored a golden goal two minutes before the end of extra-time in the play-off for the 11-12 positions to hand Canada their first win in the 12-nation tournament.
Pakistan, who won the World Cup in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994, had finished 11th in the 1986 edition in London. They were sixth in the last tournament in Germany in 2006.
Pakistan return home with five defeats and just one win in the six matches they played at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.
Tendulkar was the lone candidate for ODI double-ton: Gilchrist
MUMBAI, Mar 12: Only Sachin Tendulkar could have cracked a double-century in ODIs, according to former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, who feels the stupendous achievement is a testimony to the iconic Indian batsman's longevity in international career.
"If there's one man who's going to do it, it was he (Tendulkar). It is a wonderful testament to his longevity. The greatest sign of a champion is longevity and Tendulkar is beyond anyone else in this regard," Gilchrist said on Thursday.
"Probably in 10 years' time he'll get 300," added the wicketkeeper-batsman, who will lead defending champions Deccan Chargers in the third edition of the Indian Premier League commencing on Friday. |
