Rain disrupts life in Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE, Jul 31: Heavy rain yesterday flooded roads and streets in the city affecting vehicular traffic. Some of the major roads, including Mavoor Road and Pavamani Road, were under water by evening. Most of the low-lying areas in the corporation limits were inundated. According to official sources from the meteorological observatory on the beach here, 86.8 mm of rainfall was record in Kozhikode between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Caution on infertility
KOZHIKODE, Jul 31:Lifestyle-linked infertility is alarmingly on the rise in the country, K.U. Kunjimoideen, reproductive medicine expert, has said.He was addressing a press conference to announce the launch of the Asian Reproductive Health Foundation, a charitable initiative, in connection with the first anniversary of the Asian Reproductive Medicine Centre here yesterday. He said a study had projected that infertility could affect one in five couples in India by 2015.

Delimitation biased, says UDF
KOZHIKODE, Jul 31: The UDF co-ordination committee of the Kozhikode Corporation has alleged that grave irregularities have been committed in ward delimitation in the corporation area.N.P. Moideen, K. Moideen Koya and Pottangadi Kishenchand, leaders of the committee, warned on Thursday that there would be serious repercussions if the irregularities were not eliminated."It is clear the process of ward delimitation has been highly discriminatory." The irregularities were glaring in Kuttichira, Mukhadar, Medical College and Medical College South, they said. They also alleged that the delimitation exercise had been conducted in such a way as to be advantageous to the LDF in 40 of the 55 wards in the corporation."The Election Commission's role has been reduced to that of a mere spectator," they alleged in a statement.
Sandeep Singh, Jhulan nominated for Arjuna
NEW DELHI, Jul 31: Ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh, India's women's cricket captain Jhulan Goswami and boxer Dinesh Kumar are among the top sportspersons nominated for the Arjuna award, in recognition of their outstanding achievements during the last year. The National sports awards (Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dhyan Chand) selection committee, headed by P T Usha, met in Delhi on Friday and finalised the list of awardees. The selection committee will now submit the names to the government, which will formally announce the list in the next few days. Generally, the names submitted by the committee are approved, but the Sports Ministry can make changes.
Govt under mafia control, says court
KOCHI, Jul 31: The Kerala High Court Friday harshly criticized the state government saying it is under the control of the mafia. Justice Sirijagan said this while considering a plea on the granite quarry operating in Malayattoor. The court said only politicians and mafia gangs are getting benefit from the government. The court asked the government whether they are controlled by someone else behind the curtains. Are mafias governing the state, the court asked? Laws are applicable only to the common man and judges. The court reminded that they have the right to even call the army if the police are helpless.
Courts should pronounce verdict only after examining facts, says
T'PURAM, Jul 31: The State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Friday said that the courts should pronounce verdict only after examining the facts. He also said the court should not assess Kerala on the basis of a regional case. Balakrishnan was responding to the statement by Justice Sirijagan of the Kerala High Court that the state government was under the control of the mafia. Balakrishnan accused the central government for not sending army at times of mounting Maoist attacks. He pointed out that now the court is insisting to launch army for closing a mere quarry. If court points out mistakes the government will examine it. He also said the court also has the accountability to hear what the police have to say.

Abraham happy with Arjuna award honour
NEW DELHI, Jul 31: Top Indian athletes Joseph Abraham and Krishna Poonia expressed gratitude to the government for selecting them for the Arjuna award and said this would motivate them to do better for the country. Discus thrower Poonia, who won gold in the Asian All Star Athletics Meet, said her efforts for eight years got recognition from the government. "I am very happy that I got the award. I thanked the government for the honour, it will motivate me in doing better," she said at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. "The efforts in my eight year career have got recognition. I am looking forward to doing well in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games later this year," said Poonia.

T'puram rail division pats Arjuna award winner KJ Kapil Deve
T'PURAM, Jul 31: Selection of K J Kapil Dev for Arjuna award for 2010 was hailed by Thiruvananthapuram division of Railway with which he is employed. Divisional Railway manager Rajiv Dutt Sharma congratulated Kapil Dev on winning the honour, a railway release said. Dev was the captain of Indian volleyball team in the Dopha Asian Games and had represented the country in many international competitions. He is now working in the Commercial Branch of the Divisional office here, a Railway release said. Dev hails from Varkala near here and his wife Radhika is also a volleyball player in the railway team.

2 killed in fresh violence in Kashmir Valley
SRINAGAR, Jul 31: Fresh violence erupted on Friday in the Kashmir Valley after days of relative calm with security forces opening fire to quell stone-pelting protesters who clashed with them at several places, leaving two persons dead and 70 others injured. Strict restrictions were imposed on the movement of people following a call by the separatists to march to Maisuma in the heart of the city to protest the killing of youths allegedly in firing by security forces during demonstrations. Shoukat Ahmad Chopan and Mohammad Ahsan Ganai were killed and seven others injured when security forces opened fire on a mob at Arampora village of Sopore, 55 km from here in Baramulla district of north Kashmir Friday afternoon, police said.

RJD loses national party status
NEW DELHI, Jul 31: Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has been derecognised as a national party by the Election Commission, a decision that comes ahead of the Assembly polls in Bihar. Five other parties also lost their recognition as a State party. Election Commission sources said on Friday that while the parties may retain their symbol, they would lose facilities like utilising All India Radio and Doordarshan for poll-eve broadcasts and free copies of electoral rolls. The RJD which is a recognised party in Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur and Nagaland lost its national party recognition following its poor showing in Jharkhand where the party has been derecognised, the sources said.

Toll rises to 350 in Pakistan floods
ISLAMABAD, Jul 31: The death toll due to continued monsoon rains in Pakistan rose to 350 on Friday, government officials claimed, as tens of thousands of people are still trapped in flooding waters that submerged dozens of villages across Pakistan. The ongoing monsoon rains brought misery to people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan and parts of Punjab and caused widespread population displacement. The ill-equipped rescue workers were struggling to reach people in far-flung areas. Worst hit was the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where flash floods and torrential rains killed nearly 300 people. Television footage showed images of people clinging to woods, trees and fences while many more took shelter on rooftops of buildings amid pools of flooded waters.
Sarkozy threatens immigrants who target police
PARIS, Jul 31: President Nicolas Sarkozy says he wants to revoke the French citizenship of immigrants who put police officers' lives in danger. Mr. Sarkozy said on Friday in a speech in Grenoble that French nationality should be revoked "from any person of foreign origin who voluntarily threatens the life of a police officer" or other public authority. The southeastern city saw clashes this month between youths and police at a housing project that is home to many immigrants after a resident suspected in a casino armed robbery was killed while fleeing police. Some youths allegedly fired on police. Tensions have simmered in projects around France since nationwide riots in 2005.

Second Test between India- Sri Lanka ends in a dull draw
COLOMBO, Jul 31: The second cricket Test between India and Sri Lanka meandered to a tame high-scoring draw here Thursday with a staggering 1478 runs being scored over five days on a track which proved to be graveyard for bowlers. With little interest left on a dreary last day, the Indians scored a mammoth 707 all out in the first innings, recording their second-highest total ever largely due to a dogged resistance by the last wicket pair of Ishant Sharma (27) and Pragyan Ojha (17). The hosts then scored 129 for three in their second innings before both the captains decided to call off play, bringing an end to a dull Test completely dominated by the batsmen with just 17 wickets falling.
Saina Nehwal to get Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
NEW DELHI, Jul 31: India's ace shuttler Saina Nehwal was on Friday selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country's sporting honour, for her outstanding achievements on the badminton court. National sports awards (Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dhyan Chand) selection committee headed by P T Usha met on Friday and decided to bestow the Khel Ratna on Saina after considering her brilliant performance in the last one year. The World number two Indian has been in red-hot form in the last one year, where she reached the semifinals of the All England Super Series in March before winning three successive titles in June.
