|     This
film is another path-breaker from director Jayaraj and is based
on a true story by noted Mathrubhoomi photographer Rajan Poduval.
The film revolves around a mentally ill woman played brilliantly
by Shobhana who plays the central character and says only one
word “Killeri” throughout.
Makalkku
is noteworthy due to the performance of Sobhana and a small girl
Baby Rehana. This steamy tearjerker is able to leave an impact
on the audience though it drags towards the end.
Jayaraj
has been faithful to Rajan Poduval’s original story and along
with Madambu Kunhikuttan’s dialogue and screenplay the film has
not taken any cinematic liberties. A pregnant mad woman on the
streets gives birth to a baby girl in a hospital. She has no memory
about her past or any emotions and says only one word and that
is “Killeri”.
It
is a doctor at the asylum, Warrier (Suresh Gopi) who tre ats
Killeri. The little baby girl Manasi (Baby Rehana) is brought
up by the doctor, hospital staff and inmates. She grows up to
be an adorable 5-year-old as her mother has no motherly feelings
or any sort of emotion. But the law catches up as she is forced
to leave the asylum where she grew up.
Some
of the best moments of the film are the interactions between Manasa
and the inmates of the hospital. Shobana is first class as the
mad woman. M.J.Radhakrishnan photography and songs by Ramesh Narayana
including the Adnan Sami number are good.
